What are Warts?

Warts are small, noncancerous growths that appear when your skin has been infected by one of the many strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). The infection speeds cell growth, causing the outer layer of the skin to thicken and harden. Warts can appear anywhere on the body but are most common on the hands and feet.

Clinical Wart Removal Methods

There are several treatments that have proven highly effective in removing warts. Clinical treatments include:

  • Laser Treatment
  • Removal via Shave Biopsy
  • Freezing/Cryotherapy (Liquid Nitrogen): This is one of the most effective methods of wart removal. By applying a small amount of liquid nitrogen to the affected area, a blister forms underneath the wart. The dead tissue sloughs off within 1-2 weeks as the blister heals, and the wart falls off along with it.

Caring for Your Wound after Liquid Nitrogen Treatment

Following your cryotherapy treatment, you may experience some mild side effects that include pain, blistering, and discoloration of the treated area. How you care for your wound in the days after the procedure will speed the healing process and limit scar tissue. After cryotherapy:

  • Don’t break the blister after the treatment as it could cause infection
  • Clean the area twice a day with gentle soap and tepid water
  • You may take aspirin or Tylenol to alleviate the pain
  • Healing can take up to three weeks
