What are Varicose and Spider Veins?
Varicose and spider veins are swollen, twisted veins that most commonly appear on the legs with a bruise-like appearance. Pregnancy, age, and obesity increase your risks of developing these vein conditions.
How are They Formed?
Protruding veins develop if there is an issue in the structure of the vein that prevents the inner valves from keeping blood flowing normally. Typically, these valves act as one-way flaps but if they do not close correctly blood can leak back into the lower portion of the vein rather than continuing toward the heart. Over time, as blood accumulates in the vein, the building pressure causes the walls of the vein to weaken and the veins grow larger.
Treatment Options
Laser
With high-intensity light, we can close off a varicose vein by using laser energy to treat it. There are no needles involved in this treatment and it can be used for milder cases in which the veins are smaller. Laser treatment of veins can also be used at the same time as sclerotherapy vein treatment.
Sclerotherapy
In this treatment, your dermatologist will inject a small dose of prescription solution into the unwanted vein with a very fine needle. This solution irritates the vein which causes it to stick together and seal off. Over time, the collapsed vein fades and is reabsorbed into the surrounding tissue.
This procedure might require several treatments (about four to six weeks apart) to completely treat the unwanted veins. After the treatment, we suggest that you wear compression stockings for 2-4 weeks to facilitate optimal healing.
When Will I See the Results?
Laser treatment and sclerotherapy eliminate the veins almost immediately. However, your body will slowly start absorbing the veins over the course of a couple of weeks.
The results are permanent, but that does not mean that other varicose and spider veins will not appear. There are genetic and lifestyle factors that can affect the prevalence of veins so if they continue to re-appear, you may need to return for ongoing treatment.
