Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed type of cancer in the United States, with an astounding one in five Americans developing some form of skin cancer by the age of 70. Early detection and swift treatment are the key to obtaining a positive prognosis. For example, when detected early the 5 year survival rate of melanoma is 99%.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) develops in the middle and outer layers of the skin and is most often a result of prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. SCC is most likely to develop in areas commonly exposed to the sun, including the back of the hands, face, neck, lips, and scalp.
Common signs of SCC include:
- A firm, red nodule
- Flat sores with scaly crust
- Red sore on any sun-exposed area
Common signs of BCC include:
- Open sores
- Red patches or pink lesions
- Growths with elevated, rolled edges and a central indentation
Frequently used treatments for BCC are cryotherapy, Mohs surgery, and excision. Depending on the type and location of the BCC, our Board Certified Dermatologists will help you determine the best treatment for you.
Melanoma
Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer due to its ability to spread to other parts of the body. This type of cancer owes its name to the melanocyte cell from which it develops. If caught early, treatment can lead to a very low rate of recurrence or metastasis.
Common signs of Melanoma include:
- Growing or new mole on the skin that changes shape or color
- A brown or black streak under fingernails
- A mole that is itchy, bothersome, or bleeds
Treatment for melanoma is influenced by where the cancer is in its development process. In early stages, surgical excisions or Mohs surgery can be effective in removing the cells from the skin. In later stages, your doctor might recommend lymph node surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy.
