What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease that causes red, itchy, and scaly patches to appear throughout the body. The most commonly affected areas are the knees, elbows, trunk, and scalp. Under normal conditions, the skin creates new cells every day and sheds the old cells at about the same rate, allowing the new skin to replace the old. If you have psoriasis, inflammation causes the new skin cells to be produced at a faster rate than the old cells are sloughed off. This causes skin cells to accumulate and form patches that are often itchy and can be painful. Some forms of psoriasis can also lead to inflammation and pain/tenderness in the joints.

What causes Psoriasis?

The exact cause of psoriasis is still unknown but leading experts believe that it is a result of a combination of genetic and environmental factors. There are variables that can put you at a higher risk of developing psoriasis, such as:

  • Family history
  • Stress
  • Smoking
  • Cold and dry conditions
  • Heavy alcohol consumption
  • Some medications, including lithium and antimalarial drugs

What Are Effective Treatments for Psoriasis?

Psoriasis treatments aim to slow down the growth of skin cells and remove scales and/or plaques. There are several options including topical therapy, oral, and injected medications. Your Board Certified Dermatologist can work with you to develop the best treatment plan.
