Why Choose Laser Treatment for Aging Skin

Benefits of Laser Treatment for Aging Skin

Laser Resurfacing with Dr. Kesty provides several benefits that can revitalize your aging skin:

Tightens and lifts skin

Dr. Kesty is an expert in lasers, and uses energy from targeted resurfacing lasers to gently heat the underlying skin, stimulating collagen production, tightening, and lifting the skin. Laser energy can tighten skin and turn back the clock on your skin’s age.

Reduces wrinkles and fine lines

Laser resurfacing works by removing skin layers (including the top layer) using a light beam and heating the underlying tissue. The wound healing process after a Laser leads to collagen production, filling in wrinkles, moderately deep lines, and fine lines for smoother skin.

Improves skin texture and tone

Photorejuvenation with Dr. Kesty using a targeted laser wavelength significantly improves the tone and texture of your skin. Ablation from the laser removes hyperpigmentation, sun-damaged layers, revealing more even, vibrant skin underneath. It can effectively manage dark spots, freckles, and other skin color irregularities that often come with age and sun exposure.

Stimulates collagen production

The heat from the laser stimulates collagen production in the dermis and epidermis. This new collagen gives your skin a firmer, plumper look, reducing sagging and smoothing out wrinkles.

A minimally invasive procedure

Unlike traditional plastic surgery, laser treatment is minimally invasive. This means less risk, less discomfort, and quicker recovery time.

Avoid the downtime and complication of plastic surgery

Laser resurfacing procedures have no need for general anesthesia or a long, drawn-out recovery period. After fractional laser resurfacing and a laser procedure with Dr. Kesty, you can resume normal activities much sooner than with traditional plastic surgery as the skin heals much quicker from Laser.

Rejuvenates lax skin for an overall younger appearance

Aging can cause skin laxity, especially around the face, neck, and chest. Laser treatments, including ablative laser resurfacing, help tighten this lax skin, giving you a fresher, younger look.

Choosing the Right Provider

Achieving the best outcome for your individual anti-aging laser treatment in St. Petersburg heavily depends on the experience and qualifications of the selected provider.

Laser Treatment Options for Aging Skin

Laser Treatment Technology

In the world of Dermatology, laser treatments have revolutionized the way we approach skin aging. With an array of technologically advanced options and the most advanced laser medicine, Dr. Kesty can target a variety of aging skin concerns with precision.

How Does A Laser Tighten and Smooth aging skin?

CO2 fractional laser (e.g., Fraxel)

The Fraxel CO2 fractional laser offers a versatile solution to a wide range of skin imperfections associated with aging. Sundamaged skin is targeted with this fractionated laser and the lasered skin heals with minimal edema and erythema. The laser ablation using continuous light beams tightens the skin, as well as targeting any unwanted lesion and sun damage.

Erbium: YAG laser

The Erbium: YAG laser (yttrium aluminum garnet) provides an advanced skin resurfacing treatment designed to improve skin texture and tone. The erbium laser can be both fractional and fully ablative depending on the settings. Erbium lasers are concentrated pulsating beams that do minimal heat damage to the laser treated areas and cause laser vaporization of thin layers of skin. This microscopic injury to the cell of the skin by the laser ablation targets water and skin cells heal and new skin forms causing the surrounding tissue to remove skin layers and irregular skin. Erbium is an effective laser to treat sun spots, freckles, pigmentation (including dark skin and light skin), melasma, wrinkle, benign skin growths, and enlarged oil glands. Erbium also tightens skin.

Nd: YAG laser (e.g., Fotona)

Fotona’s Nd: YAG laser delivers powerful skin rejuvenation, addressing multiple layers of the skin for comprehensive anti-aging treatment.

Your treatment duration and number of sessions depends on your individual skin and your desired results. Laser Resurfacing with Dr. Kesty generally involves 2 to 6 sessions.

More about Aging Skin Laser Treatment

Ideal Candidates Skin Anti-Aging Laser Treatments

The ideal candidates for anti-aging laser treatments are individuals with realistic expectations who understand the treatment process. They have aging concerns such as wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, or uneven skin tone that they want to address. They are also in good general health and do not have any medical conditions that could affect the healing process.

Pre-Treatment Care

Avoid sun exposure

Before your treatment, it is crucial to protect your skin from the sun. This is because sun exposure can increase the risk of complications and may affect the results of the treatment. It’s recommended to use a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen and wear protective clothing when going outdoors.

Post-Treatment Care

Post-laser care instructions and care tips will be given to you both verbally and in writing on the day of your laser procedure. It is crucial to follow these instructions carefully and read all of the information. Lasers are medical treatments and treatment options can vary including nonablative laser treatment and other types of lasers. Dr. Kesty and her staff will provide specific instructions after antiaging laser. Please do not hesitate to contact us before or after any laser if you have any questions regarding the care of your skin.

Apply a gentle moisturizer daily or as directed by Dr. Kesty.

After your treatment, your skin may feel dry and sensitive. Gentle skin care including using a gentle moisturizer daily can help soothe your skin and speed up the healing process. You can also use an ice pack.

It is essential to protect your skin from the sun for 4 weeks before and after your treatment to prevent any damage and ensure the best results. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is recommended. Popular brands of sunscreen may be suitable- please check with Dr. Kesty or her staff. Do NOT get a sun burn or sun tan for 4 weeks before or after any chemical peel or light therapy including fractional co2, pulsed dye laser, acne treatments, non-ablative lasers, radio frequency treatments, q-switching, etc.

Avoiding strenuous activities and heat exposure for at least 48 hours post-treatment. Smoking is not recommended before or after any laser.

Do not pick or peel you skin after facial laser treatments or laser on your thorax, forehead, mouth, eye, nose, or any part of your body. Exfoliation of any kind is prohibited after a laser. Petroleum jelly can be applied in most cases.

If you have a blister, itch, blood, fever, bruise, inflammation, adverse effect, darker pigmentation, cold sores, or any other potential adverse effect please call the office immediately.

Side Effects and Risks of Laser Treatments for Anti-Aging

Like any medical procedure, laser treatments have potential side effects and risks. These may include redness, swelling, and discomfort in the treated area. Temporary pigment changes and a rare risk of scarring are also possible. However, when performed by a Board Certified Dermatologist with extensive laser training, like Dr. Kesty, these risks are significantly minimized. Her expertise ensures not only outstanding results but also a safer, more comfortable treatment experience.

Superiority of Laser Treatments Over Alternative Methods

While there are numerous methods to combat the signs of aging, laser treatments with Dr. Kesty stand out for their efficacy and precision. Below, we explore alternative treatments, all of which, while useful, may not provide the same level of results as laser therapy.

Anti-aging Creams

Anti-aging creams can provide some temporary improvement to skin quality, primarily through hydrating properties and by promoting collagen production. However, their effects tend to be less dramatic and slower to manifest than laser treatments. In contrast, laser therapy can deliver more noticeable results in a shorter time frame.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels, which involve applying a brand of chemical solution such as glycolic acid, a retinoid or vitamin, or another chemical substance, to remove the skin’s top layers, can indeed be a tool to reveal smoother and younger-looking skin. Still, the recovery period can be lengthy and uncomfortable. Laser treatments, on the other hand, offer comparable or better results, often with less downtime and discomfort.

Microneedling

Microneedling promotes skin rejuvenation by creating small punctures in the skin to stimulate healing and collagen production. While it can be beneficial, it often takes many sessions to see significant results. Laser treatments can often achieve more substantial results in fewer sessions and less downtime and pain.

Ultrasound Therapy (e.g., Ultherapy)

Ultrasound therapy, such as Ultherapy, is another non-invasive treatment for skin tightening. While it’s a safe method, its effects tend to be less dramatic compared to laser treatments. Laser therapies can provide more pronounced skin tightening and rejuvenation.

Radiofrequency Treatments (e.g., Thermage)

Radiofrequency treatments like Thermage use heat to stimulate collagen production for skin tightening. However, these treatments typically require multiple sessions and the results can be inconsistent. With laser treatments, patients typically see more predictable, visible results.

In summary, while each of these alternative treatments can provide some degree of improvement to aging skin, none offer the comprehensive, efficient, and potent anti-aging effects provided by laser treatments.

Understanding Aging Skin

Aging is a natural process that every person goes through. Over time, it can cause noticeable changes in our skin, including wrinkles, crepey skin, and sagging. By understanding the causes and symptoms of aging skin, we can better prevent and treat these concerns.

Symptoms of Aging Skin

Wrinkles

Wrinkles are lines and creases that form in the skin and can draw attention away from your naturally beautiful features. They are a natural part of the aging process and primarily caused by the loss of the skin’s elasticity and the slowdown of collagen and elastin production.

Crepey Skin

Crepey skin is characterized by thin, wrinkled skin resembling crepe paper. Crepey skin can occur around the eyes, on the neck and chest, and other areas of the face and body. Skin that appears crepey can make you look older than your actual age.

Turkey Neck/Sagging Neck

Turkey neck is a term used to describe sagging skin on the neck, which is a common sign of aging and can be exacerbated by weight loss.

Dark Spots

Dark spots, or age spots, are small, dark areas that appear on the skin following prolonged sun exposure. Dark spots can be a freckle, lentigo, sunspot, keratoses, pre-cancer, skin cancer (malignancy), uneven complexion, oil gland, capillary, vein, melanin, and other types. Dark spots can appear as a result of the natural aging process or sun exposure.

Red Spots

Red spots, including a blood vessel, stretch marks, acne scarring, hypopigmentation, background redness, and acne/rosacea, can be a symptom of aging skin. Red spots can contribute to an uneven complexion.

Rough tone and texture of the skin

As the skin ages, you lose and damage the collagen and elastin that keeps skin looking plump and smooth. With sun exposure and passing birthdays, you may feel like your skin appears dull, uneven, and rough.

Causes

The aging process, sun damage, lifestyle, and genetic factors all contribute to the changes we see in our skin as we age.

Natural aging process

As we age, our skin naturally becomes thinner, less elastic, and more fragile. Our bodies produce less collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for our skin’s firmness and elasticity.

Sun damage

Prolonged exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light damages the fibers in our skin called collagen and elastin. When these fibers break down, the skin begins to sag, stretch, and lose its ability to bounce back after stretching.

Genetic factors

Our genes play a critical role in how quickly the normal aging process unfolds. Some people may develop wrinkles or age spots earlier than others based on their genetic predisposition.

Prevention of Aging Skin

While we can’t stop the natural aging process, we can slow it down and mitigate some of its effects with a few key preventative measures.

Regular use of sunscreen

Wearing sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day, even on cloudy days, can protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Proper skincare routine

Following a consistent skincare routine that includes cleansing, moisturizing, and exfoliating can help maintain your skin’s health and appearance.

Limiting sun exposure

In addition to wearing sunscreen, limiting your time in the sun, especially during peak hours, can help prevent premature aging.

Lifestyle

Eating a variety of healthy foods, adequate sleep, stress reduction, exercise, sun protection, avoiding toxins (including smoking), can help slow the aging process.

FAQs about Laser Treatment of Aging Neck Skin and Neck Wrinkles

Can anything tighten aging skin?

Yes, several treatments can tighten aging skin, with laser treatment being the most effective. Lasers promote the production of collagen and elastin, two vital proteins for maintaining your skin’s elasticity and firmness. Other options include chemical peels, microneedling, and ultrasound therapy, but none offer the precision, efficiency, and results provided by lasers.

Do lasers work on aging skin?

Absolutely, lasers are highly effective at treating aging skin. They can target a range of issues, from wrinkles and fine lines to age spots and uneven skin tone. Laser treatments can stimulate collagen production, leading to smoother, tighter, and more youthful-looking skin.

Does laser treatment for aging skin hurt?

While laser treatment for aging skin may cause some discomfort, it is generally well-tolerated. Patients often describe the sensation as a series of rapid, hot pinpricks. However, to make the process as comfortable as possible, a local anesthetic is typically applied to numb the treatment area beforehand. This greatly minimizes any pain or discomfort, making the procedure much more manageable for the patient.

How will my skin look and feel as I recover from my laser resurfacing treatment?

During the recovery period following laser resurfacing treatment, it is common to experience some skin changes. Immediately after the procedure, your skin may feel warm, similar to mild sunburn, and appear red or pink.

As the healing progresses, you might experience some itching, which is a normal part of the skin’s recovery process. It is essential, however, not to scratch or pick at your skin during this time, as it can interrupt the healing process and potentially lead to an adverse effect.

In some cases, a broad-spectrum antibiotic may be prescribed to prevent any potential infection. As always, it’s crucial to follow the post-treatment instructions provided by your Dermatologist, such as moisturizing the area and protecting it from sun exposure, to ensure optimal results and a smoother healing process.

What are the best skin tightening lasers?

The CO2 fractional laser (Fraxel), Erbium: YAG laser (Sciton), and Nd: YAG laser (Fotona) are all top-of-the-line lasers used in skin tightening treatments. The choice of laser depends on the specific needs of the patient, the extent of aging, and the desired outcome.

How can I make my aged skin look younger?

Combining regular skincare practices with professional treatments is the best approach. Regular use of sunscreen, a balanced diet, proper hydration, and a skincare routine tailored to your skin type are crucial. Adding professional treatments like laser therapy can significantly enhance the effects, rejuvenating the skin and reducing signs of aging.

What is non-surgical treatment for aging neck?

Non-surgical treatments for an aging neck include laser treatments, chemical peels, microneedling, and ultrasound therapy. Among these, laser treatments are highly effective due to their ability to stimulate collagen production and promote skin tightening without any incisions or significant downtime.

Can crepey skin be reversed?

While we cannot entirely reverse the aging process, treatments like laser therapy can significantly improve crepey skin’s appearance. By boosting collagen and elastin production, laser treatments can smooth out crepey skin, making it look firmer and more youthful.

How do you fix crepey skin without surgery?

Non-surgical treatments such as laser therapy, chemical peels, and microneedling are all excellent options for improving crepey skin. Of these, laser treatments are often the most effective, providing noticeable results after just a few sessions.

Does it matter if i have a darker skin or lighter skin tone as to the effectiveness of the laser treatment for aging skin procedure?

Absolutely, skin tone can indeed influence the effectiveness of laser treatment for aging skin. Lasers work by targeting specific pigments in the skin, and darker skin tones may absorb more of the laser light, potentially leading to complications like changes in skin color, burns, or scars. Lighter skin tones typically respond better to laser treatments and carry a lower risk of side effects. However, advancements in laser technology and appropriate patient selection have made laser treatments safer for darker skin types. It is crucial to have a consultation with a Board Certified dermatologist, like Dr. Kesty, who understands the intricacies of treating various skin tones and can customize the treatment plan accordingly.
